Effect of virus Infection on the Growth and the Rate of Photosynthesis of Strawberry Plants

Abstract
This study was carried out to elucidate the effect of virus infection on the growth and rate of photosynthesis of strawberry plants by using strawberry cultivar ¢¥Hokowase¢¥ infected with single virus (mottle virus), and complexes of two (mottle virus+crinkle virus) and of three viruses (mottle virus+crinkle virus+mild yellow edge virus).
The results obtained were as follows:
1. Virus-infected plants had smaller leaves and shorter petiole which reduced fresh and dry weight compared to healthy plant. In contrast, the number of leases per plant were increased by virus infection. These adverse effects of virus infection on the growth of strawberries appeared more severly by complex infections of two or three viruses than single virus infection.
2. The rate of photosynthesis per plant was decreased in relation to the leaf area by virus infection.
3. The rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf area was also reduced by complex infections of two or three viruses, but not by single virus infection.
